In 2018, 25 August is the Ghost Festival (中元節). In Japan, there is a similar custom which is called Obon (お盆). It’s not a scary event like the Ghost Festival, but the meaning is mostly the same.
In this season, we believe our ancestors come back to their families, and the living families get together and hold a memorial service for the ancestors. When we have this event, the living people bring gifts for other families to cherish one another. We call this gift Ochugen (お中元). It is said that this custom was introduced to Japan in ancient times. Do you remember the movie “Coco”? It is based on Mexican culture. Countries located in very different places have the same custom. The world is quite impressive.
