ASAMA SHUZO

ASAMA SHUZO

GUNMA PREFECTURE

EST 1953

A company that brings happiness to everyone—past, present, and future.

Asama Shuzo Co., Ltd. was founded during the Kansei era, following the great eruption of Mount Asama in the third year of Tenmei (1783).

Located in one of the coldest regions where icy winds blow in from the Sea of Japan, it is the westernmost sake brewery in Gunma Prefecture.

The Motto of Our Brewers

“To bring smiles to those who enjoy our sake.”

Today, our sake is crafted by local artisans—our very own Asama Toji (master brewers of Asama).

In Naganohara, winters are harsher than most can imagine, with temperatures in January often dropping below -10°C.

Even in this extreme cold, our brewers dedicate themselves each day with a positive spirit, holding to the motto:

“Let’s enjoy the brewing process so that our customers can enjoy the sake.”

A One-of-a-Kind Sake That Embraces the Character of the Land

Asama Shuzo is located in the lush, green town of Naganohara, where approximately 80% of the area is surrounded by mountains.

At an elevation of about 600 meters, we harness the soft water that flows from the surrounding mountain ranges and the dry climate ideal for drawing out the umami of the koji.

We are dedicated to creating truly unique sake—sake that can only be brewed in this land.

Pursuing a “True Local Sake” — A One-of-a-Kind Brew

Just as winemakers grow their own grapes, we believe that crafting a true local sake begins with cultivating our own rice.

With this philosophy in mind, Asama Shuzo began growing sake rice in 2011 (Heisei 23).

Among various varieties, we chose Kairyō Shinkō—a rice that our fifth-generation brewer fell in love with for its elegant, upright stalks and excellent compatibility with the soil of Naganohara.

To bring you Asama Shuzo’s vision of true local sake, we continue to increase our rice cultivation area each year.
